Davidson claims
victory
Martin Bullock Raceteam rider Nigel
‘Speedy’ John was left seriously injured
after crashing out at Waterworks during the Lightweight
Manx Grand Prix, which was eventually won by Irishman
Barry Davidson.
It was Yamaha mounted Neil Kent who
was the early leader however, passing Davidson on the
opening lap to lead by over ten seconds. A problematic
pit stop dropped him down the order before he eventually
retired on the third lap. That left Davidson clear in
the lead which he held to the flag, lapping well short
of the class lap and race records, with no real pressure
for the lead.
Behind him however, Brian Spooner,
Tony Cawte and Nigel John were locked in battle for
second place. John had pushed his way through to second
on the third lap, but crashed out at Waterworks taking
Tony Cawte with him. Welshman John suffered multiple
injuries, including some to his back and there were
fears that some of these injuries could prove to have
long term effects. 24 hours later, however, there appears
to be considerable progress, and he is due to fly out
to Liverpool for specialist treatment in the near future
and it is hoped he can make a full recovery in time.
That left veteran Spooner in the clear to take second
place with Stuart Garton inheriting third place on his
ageing, but immaculate Yamaha.
There were only 15 finishers separated
by almost 14 minutes on corrected time at the chequered
flag.
Oversby rewarded with race
win after difficult fortnight
Classic ace Alan Oversby finally got
his reward after a difficult fortnight’s racing
on the Isle of Man, when he claimed a popular win in
the Ultra Lightweight Manx Grand Prix. Oversby had previously
been battling for the lead in both Classic Races before
being forced to retire, but he finally saw the chequered
flag in his third and final race of the week, as race
winner.
It was newcomer Michael Dunlop who
set the early pace on his 125cc machine but he eventually
retired on the second lap at Kirk Michael. Mark Castle
took over the running but after a slow pit stop it was
Oversby who took over at the front, and he was never
caught. Castle finished second with local rider Graham
Taubman third. Taubman had actually led this race twelve
months previous before crashing out at Glen Helen so
was relieved to see the finish.
Newcomer Daniel Sayle was the first
125cc machine home in 15th but the honour of best newcomer
went to Barry Poll who finished 13th having missed the
Newcomers Race proper on Monday.
